Support / Mobile Scale and RFID Manual

Notice:

DO NOT remove any software applications included with the Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID system while the application is installed on your handheld device. Failure to install all included software applications of the Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID system will cause the application to function incorrectly.

The Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID system was designed for Windows Mobile 5.0 running on handhelds with ARM4I processors. Handhelds running other versions of Windows Mobile may run the software but no support will be given by Allweigh Scale Systems Inc. for operating systems other then Windows Mobile 5.0. Handhelds running processors other then the ARM4I may run the Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID system but generally require additional prerequisites to function. Assistance on where these can be downloaded from can be requested at http://www.allweigh.com/contact provided details of the make, model and processor type of the handheld are provided.

Allweigh Scale Systems Inc. recommends the use of HP iPAQ handheld PCs running Windows Mobile 5.0 and will be able to provide the best support for these handheld models.

If at any time you are experiencing technical difficulties the first step is to restart all the equipment.

Start up:

  1. Connect all Load Cell cables and RFID serial cable to Computerized Scale Control Box, ensure all weight is removed from platform and plug in AC adaptor.
  2. Turn on the mobile device with the Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID program installed.
  3. Click the Start icon in the top left corner, click programs then click the Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID icon to start the program.

Setting up connection to the scale

There are two ways of connecting to your Computerized Scale. The most common and the method the system comes preconfigured for is a direct connection from the scale to your computer (also known as a peer-to-peer connection). The other option is to connect the computerized scale to an existing wireless network. This manual only provides support for a peer-to-peer connection and setup instructions for HP iPAQ handhelds.

Peer-to-Peer: Direct connection from computer to scale

Peer-to-Peer (Ad-HOC) network

Networked: Connection from computer to scale through a wireless router

Infrastructure network
  1. Ensure the Power and Wireless Link lights are flashing on the Allweigh Computerized Scale Box.
  2. Click the Start icon in the top left corner of the screen
  3. Click iPAQ Wireless from the displayed menu
  4. If the WiFi button is grey with a red X, click on it to enable your wireless card.
  5. Click the Settings button to the right of the WiFi button, then click the Network Adapters tab at the bottom of the screen and click on the HP iPAQ WiFi Adapter in the adapter list.
  6. The WiFi adapter settings page is displayed, click Use specific IP address and enter the following values into the area provided:
      - IP address: 192.168.1.45
      - Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
      - Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
  7. Click the OK button in the top right corner then click OK to the dialog box that appears.
  8. Click the Wireless tab at the bottom of the screen.
  9. Select Only computer-to-computer from the Networks to access list.
  10. From the list of available networks, click on the Computerized Scale network, and select the Network Key tab from the window that opens and enter 123456abcd into the Network Key box, then click OK in the top right corner of the screen.

  13. Your device will now connect by default to the Computerized Scale network.
  14. It is recommended that you disable your device from entering standby mode as this will cause problems running the Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID program with your wireless adapter. Please check the manual that came with your device for instructions on how to do this.

Hardware Settings

  • Connected Scale: This is a menu for future updates that will be compatible with multiple types of scales. It currently has no effect on the operation of your system.
  • Connected Tag Reader: This is a menu for future updates that will allow for one touch programming of different brands of RFID readers.
  • Data Logging: This allows you to choose whether or not to log your data to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Scale Settings

  • Adjust Calibration (%): This allows you to adjust your current calibration by a set percentage. It is not recommended to adjust this setting unless you are certain that your scale’s calibration is off by a consistent percentage.
  • Count By: This sets the increment the scale will count by. For high capacity scales it is recommended to set this value higher to increase readability.
  • Capacity: This sets the maximum displayable weight of the scale. It is recommended to set this to the maximum weight your scale is designed for.
  • Filter Level: This sets the level of filtering applied to the weight before it is displayed. The higher this is set the more stable the scale weight will be but the slower it will respond.
  • Filter Lock: The Filter Lock is used to lock onto weights when the scale begins to stabilize. It is useful for weighing moving objects.
  • Units: This sets whether the scale is displayed in LBS or KG.
  • Calibrate Scale: This sets the calibration of the scale. It is not recommended to adjust this unless instructed to by Allweigh Scale Systems Inc.
  • Restore Defaults: Restores the factory default Scale Settings.

Starting the Scale

  1. On the main page of the Allweigh Computerized Scale program click the Start button.
  2. If Data Logging is enabled then the program will auto generate an Excel spreadsheet with the fields selected in the program settings. It will prompt you to enter a name for the spreadsheet.
  3. If there are any problems connecting to the scale, "Comm..." will be displayed instead of the weight. Please see troubleshooting for help with this error.
  4. Once the program is opened the current weight will be displayed. The program functions exactly like a scale with the addition of RFID reading and data logging.

Operating the Scale

  • Logging Data:
      - The Weight and EID and FID are always displayed and if you choose custom log fields they will also be displayed. You can enter data into the custom fields by clicking on them and entering the text you would like to log.
      - To save the entered data to the Excel spreadsheet simply click the print button and the data will be saved.
      - The printed data will be displayed in the lower portion of the screen as well as saved to the auto generated Excel spreadsheet.
  • Zeroing the Scale: To Zero the scale simply click the Zero button in the bottom left corner, the onscreen weight will then be zeroed.
  • Program RFID Reader: The Allweigh Mobile Scale and RFID system can auto configure your RFID reader. If your reader is selected in the Connected Tag Reader then you can simply click the Program RFID Reader above the EID display box on the main scale page, and your RFID reader will be auto configured to work with the system, otherwise please see the RFID Notice for assistance on configuring your RFID reader.

Trouble Shooting

Problem: "Comm..." is displayed and nothing happens when I put weight on the scale or scan the RFID reader

Solution: This is the caused by loss of connection to the Computerized Scale hardware. Please ensure you are within range of the Computerized Scale and it is powered on. Also ensure your wireless adapter is enabled and configured to connect to the Computerized Scale network. For assistance on completing this please see Setting up connection to the Computerized Scale.

Problem: My handheld is "locked", nothing happens when I click the screen

Solution: You will need to perform a “soft reboot” of your device, please see your device manual for instructions on how to perform this. For HP iPAQ handhelds there is a reset button generally on the bottom that you can push with your stylus.
